RCE Anji

Overview

UNEP-Tongji Institute of Environment for Sustainable Development, hereinafter referred to as “IESD”, jointly established by United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and Tongji University in 2002, has served as a strategic think-tank for UNEP, an inter-disciplinary platform for Tongji University and contributed significantly for environment and sustainable development from three main pillars – education, research and outreach. IESD has the mandate to mainstream environment and sustainable development into higher education, to promote research, education and South-South Cooperation on the environment and sustainability, to enhance the service of science and technology to policy-making and implementation, and to provide tailored solutions to the Southern countries.

Activities

From 4–7 September 2023, The Seventh Global Environment Outlook (GEO-7) Policy and Outlooks Authors Meeting held in Qingpu District, Shanghai. The meeting is officially co-hosted by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and Tongji University. The session gathered top global environmental experts, policymakers, and business representatives to deepen the understanding of the challenges of environmental sustainability and with a solution-focused approach, jointly promote low-carbon development and sustainable processes

On 14 November 2022, hosted by Tongji University, the opening ceremony of United Nations Partnership for Action on Green Economy (PAGE) 2022 Academy was held online, with a focus on Accelerating the Transition to Inclusive Green Economy: Synergy between Pollution Control and Carbon Reduction. From 14-18 November, more than 100 participants from China, Switzerland, US, Morocco, México,India, Bangladesh, Cameroon, Sierra Leone, Kenya, Colombia, Zambia, Guinea, Rwanda,Ethiopia and so on, cover dozens of countries of local governments, industries, research institutes, and international organisations joined this five-day academy.

2025 Global Environment Solutions Challenge (GESC) is now open for registration! Co-organized by Tongji University, UNEP-Tongji Institute of Environment for Sustainable Development, and the Executive Committee of the Demonstration Zone of Green and Integrated Ecological Development of the Yangtze River Delta, the challenge invites university students worldwide to propose innovative solutions to plastic pollution.

The Asia-Pacific Leadership Programme on Environment for Sustainable Development (APLP) is an annual flagship programme co-hosted by United Nations Environment Programme (UN Environment) and Tongji University, aiming to build capacity for emerging leaders from the Asia Pacific region on holistic sustainability thinking and evidence-based approaches for effective action. The Leadership Programme is organized by UN Environment-Tongji Institute of Environment for Sustainable Development (IESD) at Tongji University, closely linked with the training pillar of the Global Universities Partnership on Environment and Sustainability (GUPES). The Leadership Programme supports the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the 2030 Agenda – Goal 4 Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunity for all, and other goals reflected in each year’s theme.

From November 1 to 4,2024, the Alliance of Environment Deans 2024 Annual Conference and the Fourth Dean’s Forum of Environment Schools were successfully held in Shanghai. In response to President Xi Jinping’s call to build the “Silk Road Economic Belt” and the “21st Century Maritime Silk Road,” Tongji University took the initiative to establish the Belt and Road Environmental College Deans Alliance in 2018, with members from 82 universities and research institutions across 38 countries.
