Federal University of Technology of Paraná (UTFPR) “NAPI – CLIMATE EMERGENCY”, financed by the Araucária Foundation (2023-2026), has the main objective of developing studies and technology and innovation projects aimed at assessing the impact of climate change in the State of Paraná and promoting the mitigation of greenhouse gas and aerosol emissions from urban-industrial and agricultural activities, as well as adaptation to future climate scenarios in which extreme climate events tend to intensify. The studies and projects have as their main scope the quantification of impacts and reduction of risks to economic and social activities in view of the differentiated socio-environmental vulnerability and the necessary prevention of the impacts of global climate change. The proposals are divided into five thematic axes structured as follows: 1 – Diagnosis and particularities of climate change in the State of Paraná; 2 – Impacts of climate change on biodiversity and the ecological bases of the Paraná territory; 3 – Mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions and short-lived climate pollutants in the State of Paraná; 4 – Human adaptability and resilience to climate change: assessment of risks and vulnerabilities; and 5 – Educational actions and perspectives in the process of raising awareness and consciousness-raising to face climate emergencies in Paraná.

Federal University of Paraná and RCE Curitiba (2020-2024): “CWB Breath: Network of air quality monitoring in Curitiba, Brazil” – An extension project with the main goals to raise awareness of the urban environment, to understand and disseminate urban air quality basic science, to learn and teach reliable methods and means to monitor air quality. The main products were the implementation of a low cost “internet of things” particulate matter monitoring network, processing and publicizing the data in a public web site and published a “do-it-yourself” guide to a low-cost monitoring unit and how to connect to the monitoring network. This second phase have started in 2025.
Conserving largetooth sawfish on the Amazonian coast (2023-2025) Partnership with “Save Our Seas Foundation” – Potentially one of the few remaining strongholds of the largetooth sawfish, the sandbanks, mangroves and murky waters along the coastline influenced by the Amazon River is where Patricia and Vincente are searching for this Critically Endangered species. Although it is still caught and traded in this region, despite conservation restrictions, the largetooth sawfish is feared by fishers and poorly understood. Patricia Charvet and Vincente Faria hope to change that: they will use environmental DNA to confirm its presence, engage with fishers through workshops and meetings, increase public awareness of it and train law enforcement officers to combat the illegal trade with the latest science. –
Project: “Southwest Atlantic Endangered Elasmobranchs: colouring for caring” – Despite the rapid development of technology, books continue to provide opportunities for children to discover, reconnect, and fall in love with the natural world. Over my lifetime the human population has doubled and some of our most iconic fish species have been depleted to the point where they are known only from the memories of the oldest fishermen. We can only conserve what we know and love and the loss of the chance to experience the wonder that sharks and rays imbue is a loss of a part that makes us human. This book provides a vital bridge to help the next generation understand the wonder of the freshwaters and coastal seas of Argentina, Brazil, and Uruguay. Education through art is an inspiration children and adults alike and provides a vital opportunity to share the wonder of our planet.
