Description of RCE and Geographic Region:
The RCE BenE Munich (RCE Munich) is a registered association, which is managed by a board of two to three members with equal rights. The association has an advisory board consisting of four persons – two persons from the Munich city administration and two persons from science.
The RCE BenE Munich works in Munich & region as a network and implements different projects with many different cooperation partners.
In 2022, RCE BenE Munich received the national award “ESD for 2030” from the German UNESCO Commission (DUK) and from the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) for its exemplary commitment to anchor ESD and the SDGs of Agenda 2030.
Munich is a large city with over 1.5 million inhabitants. Munich is located in the federal state of Bavaria, in the south of Germany. Munich is a center for culture, politics, science and media and numerous companies have their headquarters here. The foothills of the Alps offer many opportunities for excursions into the beautiful nature. In 2023 Munich celebrates its 865th birthday.
Special features of RCE Munich:
Many years of experience in civic engagement through Local Agenda 21 processes.
In 2016, Munich’s Lord Mayor Dieter Reiter signed the resolution of the German Association of Cities on Agenda 2030.
In 2012 and 2019, the City of Munich received awards for its ESD commitment from the German UNESCO Commission (DUK) and the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).
In recent years, several Munich education stakeholders have received awards from the German UNESCO Commission (DUK) and the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) for their ESD commitment.
Raising awareness through ESD is a common concern of the numerous ESD actors in Munich and is supported by the Munich city administration and city politics. Many actors have joined forces in the network “RCE BenE München”, in the “Akteursplattform BNE” or in the “Münchner Initiative Nachhaltigkeit” (MIN).

Goals and Objective:
The RCE BenE Munich acts as a platform for education for sustainable development (ESD) in Munich, a cross-cutting issue in politics, administration and civil society, with the aim of anchoring and further developing ESD in Munich’s urban society in the long term.
The RCE BenE Munich networks educational institutions and educational actors from the following areas: schools, universities, extracurricular places of learning, associations, foundations, administration, companies, institutions, NGOs, initiatives, multipliers and citizens.
The purpose of the association is to promote education for sustainable development in Munich. The aim is to enable citizens, experts and educational institutions/multipliers to shape their way of living and working independently in the sense of sustainable development.
The RCE BenE Munich focuses on promoting awareness and the holistic educational approach of ESD in its educational work in Munich.
In ition, the association works together with members and partners to anchor ESD in the structures of Munich’s educational landscape – towards a sustainable educational landscape.
In this context, the RCE BenE Munich sees itself as an initiator of ESD projects or ESD offers (e.g. for universities or schools).
The RCE BenE Munich is a provider of ideas, initiates cooperations and acts as a cooperation partner for an ESD in Munich.
Special focus:
The RCE BenE Munich (RCE Munich) aims to raise awareness of systems thinking and promotes exchange and cooperation between local, regional, national and international project groups (e.g. students) and educational actors. This conveys complex interrelationships and competitions/dilemmas of the SDGs and enables participants to reflect on the global impact of local activities.
