Description of RCE and Geographic Region:
RCE Greater Sendai strives to practice ESD adapted to the distinctive characteristics of the rural city of Osaki, the coastal city of Kesennuma and the metropolitan city of Sendai. These three municipalities have unique elements that to the diversity of the RCE’s work. Sendai is a bustling hub of activity, with roughly one million inhabitants, at the centre of the Tohoku district, 300km from Tokyo. The city of Kesennuma lies approximately 80km northeast of Sendai and is famous for its fishing port and for being Japan’s first Slow Food City. The city of Osaki, approximately 50km north of Sendai, is known for its abundant rice production.

Vision:
Developing ESD/SDGs activity by networking with each regional network as follows:
Specific activities include promoting nature conservation; reduction of wastes and environmental education in the urban area of Sendai; wetland conservation and regional development based on wet-py rice agriculture in Osaki city, named a GIAHS site;
integrated, systematic environmental education at all levels of schools, protection of the marine environment and eco-tourism in Kesennuma City, which were damaged by the earthquake on 11 March, 2011. In ition, a local knowledge base has been created to provide ESD actors with the latest scientific information, learning materials and good practices.
Objectives:
The objective of RCE Greater Sendai is to practice ESD based on regional characteristics by starting from environmental education aiming at a recycling-based society, and later expanding the scope to wider ESD issues.
