Description of RCE and Geographic Region:
The process to establish an RCE in Beijing was led by Beijing Normal University. Major stakeholders, such as universities, schools, governments, civil society organisations, both environmental and educational organisations, and research institutes have been approached and are committed to collaborate in the establishment of an RCE.
Beijing, known as the capital of China, is the fastest growing metropolitan area in China, with a population of over 15.3 million. It has a whole area of 16808 sq km (about 6500 sq mi), stretching 160kms from east to west and over 180kms north to south. It has 18 districts and counties with Dongcheng, Xicheng, Xuanwu, Chongwen, Chaoyang, Haidian, Fengtai and Shijingshan in the surburbs and Fangshan, Mentougou, Changping, Tongxian, Shunyi, Daxing, Huairou, Miyun, Pinggu and Yianqing in the outer suburbs.

Goals and Objective:
To share information and experiences on RCEs and their activities among the acknowledged and candidate RCEs;
To identify major challenges that RCEs are facing and ways to overcome such challenges;
To facilitate communication and networking among RCEs;
To raise public awareness on ESD, DESD and RCEs;
To discuss some collaborative activities among the acknowledged and candidate RCEs.

Current Activities:
ESD is combined with geography teaching in secondary school in Beijing and Shandong Province to promote sustainable development education
With our efforts, the concept of sustainable development education is infiltrated in national geography textbooks ed by Professor Min Wang
Environmental Map Competition has been been held to raise students’ awareness of environment and sustainable development
Earth Knowledge Competition has been been held to evaluate students’ knowledge of environment and sustainable development
Sustainable development education is promoted through environmental interpretation in nature reserves and national parks
International Journal of Geoheritage and Parks has been launched and is being run well
Achievements:
The compilation of Environmental Education textbooks for secondary schools in China has been completed
The compilation of textbooks about Study Travel in Yuntaishan Global Geopark has been completed
ESD has been launched in dozens of schools in Beijing and Shandong Province
The Environmental Map Competition has been held for 16 years
Upcoming Activities:
Textbooks of Environmental Education will be updated and published
The implementation of Environmental Map Competition and Earth Knowledge Competition will continue to be promoted
More secondary schools in more provinces in China will be connected to promote ESD and teacher training for ESD will be organised
