Description of RCE and Geographic Region:
The Regional Centre of Expertise Greater Masaka (RCEGM) is hosted by Uganda Martyrs University Nkozi. The University’s mandate is to teach, research and community engagements. The leadership of Uganda Martyrs University has been at the forefront of the institutionalization and propelling of the activities to initiate, host the Greater Masaka Regional Centre of Excellence (RCEGM) and the proposed activities in general. The University affirmed commitment to work with different stakeholders to promote activities of RCEGM. The RCEGM consists of the South – Eastern part of Lake Victoria crescent which includes 12 districts, namely; Bukomansimbi, Butambala, Gomba, Kalangala, Kalungu, Kyotera, Lwengo, Lyantonde, Masaka, Mityana, Mpigi, Rakai and Ssembabule. The districts that constitute the RCE are within the Lake Victoria Basin which supports approximately 3 million people through the application of social, economic, environment and ecological values.

Goals and Objective:
Vision:
To be a leading centre of expertise in promoting education for sustainable development in the Greater Masaka Region in order to improve the quality life.
Objectives:
To increase public awareness and understanding of Education for Sustainable Development
To promote the reorienting of education towards mainstreaming ESD through practical educational approaches in the formal, non-formal and informal education
Apply action research to identify sustainable solutions to emerging issues under the identified thematic areas
To identify and consolidate networks among stakeholders to document, share information and publish ESD best practices and lessons

Name of organisation: National Environment Management Authority (NEMA)
Role: To put in place and enforce environment policies, laws and procedures, and conduct joint research on environment protection and management.
Name of organisation: Ministry of Water and Environment
Role: The role is to support and conduct collaborative research, as well as funding projects in the RCEGM II.
Current Activities:
Completing development of a Memorandum of Understanding defining working terms and relationships with partners, stakeholders and members – MOU being drafted
Constituting the RCE board for proper management and running of the RCE activities
Setting up a regional sub office
Achievements:
RCE acknowledged a Flagship Project of Lake Victoria Catchment Environment Education project for its contribution to capacity development of stakeholders and partners
Implementing the research project on revitalising the utilisation practices of indigenous food resources
The community engagement and internship policies for Uganda Martyrs University were completed and approved by Senate. Started implementation especially the internship policy
Participated in the regional and RCE conferences
During the First RCE Thematic Conference held from 5th to 7th December 2017 in Okayama city, Japan, the RCE Greater Masaka was acknowledged for a Flagship Project of Lake Victoria Catchment Environment Education project for its contribution to capacity development of stakeholders and partners in the field of youth empowerment and mobilisation

Upcoming Activities:
Organise and conduct 1 training and 1 workshop on ESD for RCE member organisations, institutions/stakeholders
