Description of RCE and Geographic Region:
RCE Mumbai is located in the commercial capital of India, which is home to nearly 22 million people from diverse linguistic, religious, cultural and professional backgrounds. Rapid urbanization and commercialization to meet the demands of the steadily increasing populace has exerted tremendous pressure on the city’s environment and social structure. The impetus given to development projects such as a sea link, flyovers, expressways and new airports have fuelled the development debate wherein environmental and social issues are often compromised.

Goals and Objective:
Vision:
The vision of RCE Mumbai is to promote collaborative research and outreach amongst its partners to ress regional sustainability issues in Mumbai given the area of interest and expertise of the member organizations. The immediate focus for RCE Mumbai is on wetland and water bodies, and on waste and water management.
Goals:
Ensuring presence at international conferences, seminars and cities
Organize environmental awareness and capacity building programs
Leadership Development Programmes in ESD
Encourage young students, teachers, parents and the community to practice the 4Rs—refuse, reuse, reduce and recycle, and to make consumption
Sensitize on issues related to WASH (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene) to make peer educators thereby creating multiplier effect to come up with school and community based solutions
Integration and collaboration of regional stakeholders so as to develop joint projects promoting sustainable development (SD) and ESD

Activities

Current Activities:
Sessions in schools on issues related to the RCE Mumbai thematic areas
Sustainability challenges for colleges in order to develop a green college footprint
Promoting transformative education to ress regional challenges of Mumbai

Achievements:
Wenhui Award for Educational Innovation (2012) by UNESCO Asia Pacific Programme of Educational Innovation for Development (APEID) and the National Commission of the People’s Republic of China for UNESCO

Upcoming Activities:
Online examination for school children on ESD to be held on 7 September and 24 October 2018
Sessions on issues related to WASH (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene) to make peer educators thereby creating multiplier effect to come up with school and community based solutions
Leadership Development Programmes in ESD
