Description of RCE and Geographic Region:
RCE North Rift is located within the great rift valley which covers six counties namely;
Uasin Gishu County
Elgeyo Marakwet County
Trans Nzoia County
West Pokot County
Nandi County
Baringo County

Goals and Objective:

Long-term objectives
To sensitise stakeholders on climate change mitigation and adaptation methods;
To engage stakeholders in participatory management of the North Rift environment and natural resources;
To build capacities for clusters of stakeholders engaged in defined development projects for sustainable activities through Education for Sustainable Development;
To help communities to identify and develop solutions for emerging global environmental issues;
To promote exchanges, cooperation and integration between communities and the RCE in terms of socio-cultural differences and realities.
Short term objectives
To create an ESD network of membership;
To generate a database on the status of the North Rift environment;
Sensitise communities and policy makers on benefits of integrated solid waste management;
To empower the community towards climate change resilience;
Disseminate information on environmental management activities;
Carry out capacity building through environmental management curricula for primary and secondary schools;
Promote eco-entrepreneurship among the youth.

Activities

Current Activities:
To carry out a survey on impacts of climate change and promote mitigation and adaptation strategies for improved livelihoods of communities in the North Rift
To sensitise stakeholders on climate change adaptation and mitigation and how the communities can adapt through activities such as conservation of water springs and tree planting
To build capacities for clusters of stakeholders engaged in defined development projects for sustainable activities
Help communities to identify and develop solutions for emerging global environmental issues
Promote exchanges, cooperation and integration between communities and the RCE in terms of socio-cultural differences and realities
Conducting seminars and workshops and carrying out demo projects

Achievements:
1,500 trees planted during the Eldoret city marathon, 700 bamboo, and 800 indigenous on 22nd April 2018, a total of 20,100 trees have been grown so far
St Anthony Moiben High school on 5th May 2018, 400 Podo and 700 cypress
World Water Day 22nd March 2018; 400 indigenous at Sosiani River and 1,000 at Mumetet primary School Merewet
Marked World Environment Day 2018 with inter school environmental awareness competition, five secondary schools out of 35 were awarded, three primary schools out of the participating 18 were awarded
More than 30 stakeholders have been involved directly and indirectly in the Educational Awareness activities

Upcoming Activities:
The Green Clubs schools program reflects the thrusts/key focus areas of ESD
The promotion and improvement of quality of education
Re-orienting existing education systems at all levels to ress sustainable development – resses local community environmental problems through localising the curriculum with schools as entry points
Developing public understanding and awareness of sustainability through sensitisation activities
Training of trainers in Education for Sustainable Development, i.e. training in micro-projects establishment, localising curriculum, learning resource development etc.
Engages multiple stakeholders to participate in educational activities including government, civil society and private sector particularly in the establishment of micro projects
November 2018 – with stakeholder will mount Chebara Dam conservation half marathon
