Description of RCE and Geographic Region:
RCE Srinagar is located in the northern most part of India. Srinagar is the largest city and the summer capital of the Indian-administered union territory of Jammu & Kashmir which is bordered by three countries – Pakistan, Afghanistan and China from west to east. It lies in the Kashmir Valley on the banks of the Jhelum River, a tributary of the Indus River, and Dal and Anchar lakes. The city is known for its natural environment, gardens, waterfronts and houseboats. It is also known for traditional Kashmiri handicrafts, apple orchards and dried fruits.
The Jammu and Kashmir is facing some of the key environmental challenges related to environmental degradation and is an outcome of the unsustainable use of natural resources for economic growth and development. Other factors are poverty, population growth, inappropriate technology and consumption choices which is leading to unsustainable land use practices, poor soil and water management practices, deforestation, overgrazing, and pollution. Tourism is one of the main sources of income for the area, which also aggravates these environmental problems such as waste generation, traffic congestion, air and water pollution etc.
As per recent report, J&K has surpassed the world average in temperature rise against the global increase of 0.8 to 0.9. Temperature has recorded a 1.2 degree Celsius rise, which is affecting its crop production, occurrences of disasters, water resources and people.

Goals and Objective:
RCE Srinagar aims to engage various formal and informal sector stakeholders in planning and facilitation of ESD programmes and initiatives towards protection and conservation of mountains.
Objectives:
To enhance and strengthen stakeholder network through effective communication and knowledge sharing for ESD.
To engage and build capacity of schools, colleges, community groups and partner institutions towards implementing ESD.
To develop ESD strategies for building capacity of community to work towards ecosystem restoration and climate change adaptation.
